Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH) is studio505’s first healthcare project and first project in the South East Asia Region.  The hospital was won through an international design competition in association with HOK and CPG Consultants and consists of a 707 bed general hospital and 396 bed community hospital.  Our aim was to implement an improved typical ward layout and create a radical new design, enhancing the hospital experience for patients and staff, with ‘patient-centeredness’ at the very heart of the design.

The pioneering new design for the NTFGH wards differentiates from the typical hospital design so prevalent in the South East Asian region.  studio505’s innovative new patient bed configuration in the naturally ventilated 6 bed and 12 bed ward rooms improves natural ventilation by 200% and gives every patient their own window close to their bed with a view to a garden from which to take fresh air.  By incorporating natural ventilation and outdoor views studio505 aim to provide a comfortable and soothing environment to aid in patients’ healing process.

The design takes into consideration Singapore’s hot and humid weather where only air movement can create natural cooling effects.  The building itself is orientated in a northwest/southeast direction maximising exposure to prevailing winds, and at the same time minimising exposure to intense solar heat.  Shading is provided not only with louvers but also with the integration of nature in the form of external gardens and planters located between the angled bed modules.  The planters are aligned and positioned to be viewed from each patient’s window and at the same time create a stunning and utterly unique looking building from the outside – a new benchmark in hospital and healthcare architecture.

During the concept design stage studio505 explored and developed several different ward configuration options in addition to building multiple physical models of various sizes, including a 1:1 prototype to test out views and patient field of vision.  studio505 used state-of-the-art computer software to analyse insolation, sun shading, ventilation airflow and compared the wind flow simulation of both typical rectangular shape wards and studio505’s innovative angled ward module to compare.

studio505’s design for Ng Teng Fong General Hospital focuses on the needs of patients and their caregivers.  The design transforms care and brings health to everybody in Singapore. The hospital recently achieved Singapore’s Greenmark Platinum and is currently under construction, due for completion in 2015.
